On April 1st and 2nd, International Research Conference on System Engineering and Management Science (IRC-SEMS 2016), co-organized by Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of CAS, City University of Hong Kong, School of Economics and Management of UCAS, was successfully held in Beijing. The international conference aims to provide scholars, researches and graduate students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and neighbor regions and countries a platform sharing and communicating the latest research achievements, which covers major research areas in systems engineering and management science. 145 scholars and graduate students from domestic and foreign universities and research institutions attended the meeting.
At 9:30 AM of April 1st, the opening ceremony was held in the conference hall in Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences of CAS. Co-chair, Prof. Xu Guoliang, Chair of Department of System Engineering and Engineering Management of City University of Hong Kong, Prof. Wang Shouyang, Dean of School of Economics and Management of UCAS, Party Secretary and Vice President of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of CAS made welcoming remarks on behalf of conference organizers.
In keynote speaking, Prof. Guo Wei, President of City University of Hong Kong, NAE member, Academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave a seminar on “Understanding the Problem before Finding the Solution”. Prof. Guo Wei pointed out that researchers often made a mistake: finding the right answer, but to the wrong question. Prof. Guo Wei showed systematic methods for problem solving by giving multiple instances. Then, Academician Chen Jian, Chair of Department of management science and engineering of School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University made a speech on “Big Data Era: Opportunities and Challenges for Business Management”. He introduced the characteristics of big data, the changes in people’s life and work that brought by big data, and the impact on business. Prof. Chen also explained the opportunities and challenges in business management brought by the application of big data. Prof. Shi Yong, Associate Dean of School of Economics and Management of UCAS, Director of Research Center of Virtual Economy and Data Science of Chinese Academy of Science, academician of developing countries gave a presentation on “Big Data Mining and Data Science”. He discussed data sciences in optimization, data mining, intelligent knowledge, and showed more than 10 real-life examples of big data application.
On the afternoon of the same day, and the morning of the second day, participated scholars exchanged and shared their latest research achievements in statistics monitoring, policy and management, green production and reproduction, statistics and operations, quality management, reliability engineering, medical and health management, supply chain management, financial services, logistics management, transportation management, business service management.
At the closing ceremony, Prof. Xie Min，members of the Organizing Committee of the conference, Associate Dean of School of Science and Engineering of City University of Hong Kong congratulated the successful conclusion of the conference on behalf of the Organizing Committee. He expressed thanks to all organizers and staff. The next international conference on systems engineering and management science will be held in Xi'an in April 2017.
The international research conference showed the latest research achievements in systems engineering and management science domestic and abroad. It had significant impact on the development and promotion of this discipline.
