Xu Ying from the General Department of the second generation navigation research of Chinese Academy of Sciences brought a lecture on the development, application and future of Beidou Satellite Navigation System

On the night of April 29th, Research Xu Ying from the General Department of the second generation navigation research of Chinese Academy of Sciences brought a lecture on the development, application and future of Beidou Satellite Navigation System. The lecture was chaired by deputy director of the MBA center, associate Prof.Yan Yan of School of Economics and Management. The lecture not only attracted numerous graduate students and MBA students, but also students from other universities. Many alumni and others people together with their kids also enjoyed the science education lecture.

In the beginning of the lecture, Xu Ying introduced the name origin of Beidou satellite positioning system, and gave a brief description of the history of human navigation technology, including the original text navigation, astronomical navigation, geomagnetic navigation, radio navigation, and satellite navigation nowadays. While talking about the development of satellite navigation technology in the world, Xu Ying introduced the transit system of the United States in the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century as the representative of the first generation of single satellite positioning system. She compared the advantages and disadvantages of the second generation satellite positioning system - GPS system with Soviet GLONASS system. Xu Ying pointed out the military satellite navigation technology represented by precision guidance is the soul of modern war. As a developing country, China must have independent research and development of the core technology of satellite navigation technology. And high investment in satellite navigation technology will greatly help to promote social and economic development. China's satellite navigation investment must fundamentally be consistent with national conditions, meet the people's demand.

Further, Xu Ying introduced China's “3 Steps” overall plan in Beidou satellite navigation system construction: the first step was achieved with the finish of the first generation of Beidou satellite navigation and positioning system: BS-1 in the beginning of the new century. As the development of economics and scientific research, China started the second step of the plan and completed this step with the fulfillment of BD-2: a multi satellites area augmentation system. With the completion of the first two of three steps, China plans to build the third generation of the global navigation system by 2020.

Xu Ying also shared with the audience the application status and future of Beidou satellite positioning system. She pointed out that satellite navigation has a full range of application in national security. In future the Beidou system will focus on the functionality of "positioning, navigation, and timing" (PNT), be a strategic infrastructure that meets the need of national development, become "the pillar of a great power" that makes the country powerful and people rich.

The lecture lasted two hours Xu Ying’s wonderful talks whether in scientific knowledge or thinking way to make the audience benefit. The audience to actively ask questions about the relevant issues, Xu Ying researchers patiently explain to everyone, and we exchange. The lecture ended successfully.

The audience benefitted a lot in scientific knowledge as well as in the way of thinking from Xu’s two hours’ lecture. Xu also patiently answered the questions that the audience proposed.  The lecture was successfully held.
