On the afternoon of Dec. 8, Siwei Lecture Series started. The fist lecture was given by Prof. Liu Yuanzhang, member of China Academy of Engineering. His topic was " Propagate the Doctrine and Impart Professional Knowledge".
Prof. Liu was nearly 90 years old. He has devoted his life to quality management and has been named “Father of Quality Management” in China. He studied in Japan and U.S. for many years and came back to his motherland at the call of Mr. Qian Xuesen. For most part of the year, Prof. Liu stayed at the factories and enterprises and he has made great contributions to the quality management in China.

The lecture was hosted by Prof. Wang Shouyang, the executive dean of School of Management. He told the audience that the lecture series was named Siwei because he hoped that the faculty, the students and the alumni of our school would be prepared for danger in times of peace. Prof. Liu was the most suitable one to give the first lecture due to his virtue and great academic contributions.
As a teacher, Prof. Liu thought the responsibility of a teacher is to Propagate the Doctrine and Impart Professional Knowledge. In his eyes, doctrines are just senses of worth, philosophies and methodologies and the professional knowledge are the methods to realize the doctrines. Then in the two hours following, Prof. Liu stated the doctrines and the professional knowledge since the ancient China, starting with Zhou and Qin Dynasty, ending with the present. His wisdom and passion won a lot of applause from the audience.

At the end of the lecture, Prof. Liu spoke out his wishes for both the teachers and students. He wished that the teachers could talk about the realities in their classes so that students would learn what were happening and he also wished that the students could do more observations and think more deeply and inherit the excellent civilization of China.
