Professor Fang Xin and Professor Wang Shouyang Attended TWAS Academician Conference

The 24th TWAS Academician Conference was convened in Buenos Aries, the capital of Argentine from Oct.1st to Oct.4th. Over 300 scientists from over 60 countries and regions all over the world, more than ten ministers of the Science and Technology Department from over ten countries, the delegates from different international organizations attended the conference. Professor Fang Xin and Professor Wang Shouyang, attended the conference.

As the President of CAS and President of TWAS, Prof. Bai Chunli delivered the opening speech for the conference. He reviewed the history of TWAS in the last three decades and the contributions that TWAS has promoted in the development of science and technology of developing countries; besides, he also anticipated the further development direction of TWAS.

During the conference, Professor Fang Xin, as the Chairman of OWSD, also hosted the executive committee conference of The Third World Organization for Women in Science.

 

Background Info:
 

TWAS is an international science academy, founded in 1983 in Trieste, Italy, by a distinguished group of scientists from the South under the leadership of the late Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan. It was officially launched by the secretary-general of the United Nations in 1985. The Academy's strength resides in the quality and diversity of its membership -- internationally renowned scientists elected by their peers. TWAS Fellows, who live and work in developing countries, represent 85 percent of the membership; TWAS Associate Fellows live and work in developed countries. By 2013, January, its membership stands at 1073. The President of CAS, Prof. Bai Chunli was elected as the President of TWAS in September, 2012. He is also the first President of TWAS from China.

 

Prof. Fang Xin and Prof. Wang Shouyang were elected as fellows of TWAS in 2010 and 2011respectively.
