Prof. Su Jingqin of Dalian University of Technology Conducted a Lecture at School of Management

Writing of Business Administration Cases, the first lecture sponsored by Research Center for Cases of Legend Institute, was held at School of Management on April 21. The lecture was given by Prof. Su Jingqin, Dean of Faculty of Management and Economics of Dalian University of Technology. Vice Dean Shi Yong hosted the lecture.

Prof. Su pointed out in his lecture that cases are both a researching method and teaching method. He began with several misunderstandings of cases and cases teaching, and led to three elements included in cases: real-world situations, experience in enterprises, and adequate writing. Prof. Su emphasized that cases writing shouldn’t put emphasis on conclusion, but on how it was done. The writer should also get authorization and approval from the enterprises to avoid legal disputes.

In Prof. Su’s opinion, cases teaching is actually situational teaching. In cases teaching, students speak instead of teachers. Students are the subjects of the teaching, and teachers are the subsidiaries. Students acquire knowledge and abilities through individual thinking and cooperation. One of the important tasks of the teachers is to provide teaching situations and suitable cases, to guide students instead of pass on theories.

Do cases have structures? Prof. Su’s answer is “yes”. A case is composed of the title, the abstract, the body, the conclusion and the teaching instruction. A case must reveal the true operations of the enterprises.

At the end of the report, Prof. Su shared the objectives of CMCC(China Management Case-Sharing Center) and criteria for cases writing. He also answered the questions from the audience. The report was closed in warm applause.
