Professor Yuan Yaxiang was Elected as the Corresponding Member of Brazilian Academy of Sciences

The Brazilian Academy of Sciences announced the cooptative result of the members of 2014 on Dec. 3rd. Among the ten new corresponding members, Prof. Yuan Yaxiang was from the mathematics area. He is also the first Chinese scientist in mathematics area that been elected by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Bai Chunli, the president of CAS, was also elected as the fellow of Brazilian Academy of Sciences this time.

 

Prof. Yuan Yaxiang is the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the researcher in Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences. He has made great achievements in the study of nonlinear optimization algorithms and theory, trust region method, quasi Newton method and conjugate gradient method. And he was invited to give keynote speeches in many important academic conferences. Up till now, he has published hundreds of academic papers and four monographs, one of which has been published in English version by Springer.

 

He has won plenty of awards. He is the winner of the L. Fox Prize in 1985, the Young Scientist Award, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993, Young Scientist Award of China in 1996, the First grade Science and Technology Advance Award in Beijing in 2004, the Second Grade of National Natural Science Award of China in 2006, and the Shiing S. Chern Mathematics Award in 2011. He was elected as the SIAM Fellow in 2011 and the Fellow of AMS in 2012.
